Seven tips for latte macchiato
Hello, it's your barista Dennis again. Today we're devoting our attention to latte macchiato, a trendy drink in the whole of Europe.
The most important feature of "stained milk" - the literal translation of "latte macchiato" - is the clear separation of milk foam, liquid milk and espresso. This is exactly what many people despair of, because somehow it all gets mixed up again in the glass.
To make sure this doesn't happen to you, I've put together a few tips and tricks for you:
Tip 1: Check whether your glass fits under the spout of the espresso machine. If it doesn't, or if the spout of the portafilter protrudes into the glass, you should pour the espresso into a suitable espresso pot. Don't forget to heat the espresso pot first!
Tip 2: Remember that you now have to fill almost an entire glass with frothed milk. You may need a larger milk jug with more capacity.
Tip 3: When frothing the milk, you can keep the steeping phase a little longer, as this will allow you to produce the appropriate amount of firm milk foam.
Tip 4: Again, pay attention to the temperature of the milk! Finish the frothing process as usual. Do not forget to steam and wipe the lance.
Tip 5: Pour the milk into the glass and wait before adding the espresso. Give the milk time to separate in the glass: The liquid milk will settle to the bottom and the milk foam will occupy the top of the glass. To speed up the process of separating the foam from the milk, you can also tap the glass filled with milk foam lightly on the table two or three times. This will help the milk and foam to separate more quickly.
Tip 6: Pour the espresso slowly. Get close to the milk foam with the espresso pot, as the height and speed of fall of the espresso encourages mixing with the liquid milk at the bottom of the glass.
Tip 7: A latte macchiato can also be decorated. To do this, pour the espresso through the foam like a line. Or pour small dots into the foam. Afterwards, using a latte art pen (a metal pin or alternatively a toothpick), you can create decorations in the milk foam using skilful movements. As you know, the eye eats and drinks with you.
